A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
