The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
